Dolphins drop first conference match
The Jacksonville University women’s soccer team lost in conference play for the first time Friday night, falling 1-0 to Mercer. The Dolphins had previously been unbeaten in their last six games.
JU could not muster up much of an offensive attack as the Dolphins only managed to record six shots and only one of those was on goal. The Bears outshot Jacksonville 15-6.
The game would remain scoreless after the first half, but that would quickly change only minutes into the second period. In the 50th minute, Mercer’s Washida Blackman corralled a rebound Lauren Gassie and directed the ball into the back of the net for the game’s only score.
No player on the Dolphin roster was able to tally more than one shot in the worst offensive performance for Jacksonville all season.
“We were not ready to play tonight,” said Dolphin head coach Brian Copham. “We did not compete to the level that we know we are capable of. We ran up against a good team and have to be better prepared for the challenge in the future. We are looking forward to getting back out on Sunday and playing like we know we can.”
The Dolphins (6-5-3, 3-1-2) will look to rebound from the loss as they take on Kennesaw State Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
