Dolphins head into final weekend of play looking to improve seeding
Even with two losses last weekend, the Jacksonville University women’s soccer team clinched a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. JU currently sits in sixth in the conference but has the potential to move two spots to fourth and host a first round game.
The Dolphins will take on ETSU Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex in a matchup that will go a long way in determining the conference seeding. JU will then return for the regular season finale and senior day on Sunday afternoon when it hosts USC Upstate.
Jacksonville will have its hands full when the Bucs come to town as ETSU junior Ramey Kerns has scored a league leading 15 goals on the season and ranks in the top 10 nationally. Freshman Sarah Zadrazil has hooked up with Kerns on many of those goals as she has posted nine assists so far this season which is also ranked in the top 10 nationally. The Dolphins hold a 5-3-2 all-time series advantage, however ETSU was able to win last season’s match 3-0 in Johnson City.
Sunday will not only mark the end of the regular season for the Dolphins, but it will also be the final regular season home game for six of the Dolphin seniors. Marleigh Mlinac, Arianne Heaton, Kelsey Latham, Becca Massip, Emily Culbreth, and Eva Leeper have posted a 38-23-13 record in their four years as Dolphins including a share of the 2011 Atlantic Sun regular season title and a berth in the 2010 conference tournament championship game.
JU will host the Spartans for senior day at 2:00 p.m. USC Upstate has never defeated the Dolphins in five tries. They enter into the weekend with a 1-6-0 conference record and have been eliminated from postseason play but will be looking to play spoiler and keep the Dolphins from having the chance to host a tournament game.
