Joane Pierre wins A-Sun cross country title
JU women’s cross country senior Joane Pierre ended her conference career on a high note by winning the individual title at the A-Sun Championships Saturday morning in Fort Myers, Fla.
Pierre crossed the finish line in personal-best time of 17:17.5 to become first Dolphin in program history to win a conference title. She also secured first team all-conference honors for the third time in four years.
Junior Svenja Meyer earned first team all-conference accolades as well by finishing sixth in 17:40.3. The Dolphins took third overall as a team, while Lipscomb won the overall title.
“We are obviously excited for Joane to be able to run so well in front of her family and friends close to her home in Immokalee,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “Svenja ran so well to earn first team all-conference. We had a lot of clutch performances from our seniors that made the team result possible. We had personal bests from five of our six seniors (Joane, Morgan, Amalia, Bienna and LaTonya),as well as Svenja.”
Senior Morgan Keel ran a personal-best time of 18:51.3 for 26th, while senior Amalia Vogler had a new best time in 19:06.2 (32nd).
Senior Bienna Freeman ran a time of 19:40.4 for 45th place. Sophomore Sarah Bailey (19:46.2, 48th) and junior LaTonya Payne (19:48.1, 49th) finished seconds from each other. Senior Alicia Gard-Kaminkow rounded out the group in 21:23.7 (72nd).
“We ran our best race of the year as a team,” Grigg said. “The goal every year is to have our best race at the conference meet, and we did that. Now we will shift our focus to preparing for the Regional championships.”
The Dolphins will close out the year in two weeks at the NCAA Regionals Nov. 9 in Tallahassee, Fla.
