A strong second half helped the JU women’s basketball team to a 76-71 win over Columbus State in exhibition action Sunday at Swisher Gymnasium.

Junior Jade Cargill scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half and had 15 rebounds for the Dolphins. Junior Stephanie Edwards added 14 points, while senior Tracie Sneed and freshman Queen Alford each finished with 13 points. Freshman Briona Brown scored nine points and had four assists to help the cause.

The Dolphins set up the win by shooting better than 40 percent in second half from the floor (15-31, 48.4), three-point line (4-5, 80.0) and charity stripe (13-18. 72.2).

“We are happy to get the win,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We made some adjustments at half time that worked well in the second half. Like any exhibition, there were a fair share of mistakes, but we will fix those in practice this week. Overall, we are excited to get the season going Friday.”

In the second half, the Dolphins trimmed the seven-point deficit to 44-42 on a three-pointer by Alford at 15:30. The Cougars answered with a three-pointer by Shan Basley for a 47-42 advantage. JU used a 16-8 run, capped on another Alford three-pointer, to take a 58-55 lead with 9:40 left.

Columbus State cut the lead twice to one before an Edwards three-pointer gave the Dolphins a 67-63 lead (5:36). A Basley three-pointer cut the Cougars deficit to 70-67 with less than a minute remaining, but a layup by Sneed and free throws from Edwards helped secure the JU win.

Basley finished with 15 points after making 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, while Taren White had 24 points to lead the Columbus State offense.

An 11-0 run, capped on consecutive three-pointers, helped the Cougars take a 17-7 lead with 12:43 left in the first half. The Cougars pushed the lead to double-digits, 23-13, on a Basley three-pointer (7:49). The Dolphins used a 13-6 stretch, capped on a Sneed layup, to trim the lead to 29-26 with less than three minutes left. The Cougars took a 33-29 lead into the half following two Alford free throws in the final minute.

The Dolphins start the 2012-13 season Friday against Florida A&M with a special 11:30 a.m. tipoff in Swisher Gymnasium.
