Bell can't find much to attack on Drake
JU coach Kerwin Bell spent much of the day Sunday and Monday looking at film of this week’s opponent, Drake.

He doesn’t like what he sees of the Bulldogs who are coming to D. B. Milne Field with 7-3 overall, and 6-1 in the Pioneer Football League and with an opportunity to share the league title.

“On film they are one of the high-quality teams in the conference,’’ Bell said. “Top to bottom, they are one of the best.’’

When he looks at the film, Bell doesn’t have to go any farther than senior quarterback Mike Piatkowski on offense. The reigning PFL Offensive Player of the Year picked up in 2012 where he stopped last season.

He is 257-for-418 this season for 2,996 yards, 20 touchdowns and only nine interceptions.

“He has played a lot of snaps in this league,’’ Bell said. “He is among the best quarterbacks the conference has seen in the past few years.’’

Piatkowski’s favorite target is wide receiver Nick Rosa who has 51 catches for 758 yards and six touchdowns. On the ground, the Bulldogs look to Gary Scott who had 571 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

Bell said he is curious to see if the Dolphins (7-3, 5-2) are able to move against Drake, the team that broke JU’s all-time PFL win streak at 16 games last season in Des Moines, Ia.

“They’re just sound in every phase of the game,’’ he said. “They’re really solid at what they do.’’

JU is coming off a 40-14 thumping of Campbell in a game in which senior running back Keith Dawson ran for 217 yards and caught 43 yards worth of passes.

For the fourth time in five games, the JU defense held an opponent under 100 yards rushing as the Camels got 75 on the ground and it held Campbell to just one third-down conversion in 12 tries.

The Drake game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be shown on CW17 television with Cole Pepper and Steve Gilbert calling the action. On radio, Terry Norvelle and Josh McGregor will handle duties on 92.5 FM and

The game is the season finale for both teams and is Senior Day for JU as the Dolphins will recognize 17 players who have contributed to the program.
