With the fall semester in the books, the JU women’s basketball team returns to the hardwood Sunday to play Savannah State in Swisher Gymnasium at 1 p.m.

The Dolphins (3-5) will also play Troy (Dec. 18) and travel to Auburn (Dec. 22) this week to wrap the non-conference slate before the Christmas break.

"We have had a good week of practice and we are ready to get back in game mode," JU head coach Jill Dunn said. "We are looking forward to playing on Sunday."

JU is back in action following two tough losses to Clemson and USF. The Bulls used a 47-point first half in Swisher Dec. 8 to dispatch the Dolphins and continue their hot start.

Freshman Queen Alford was a bright spot for the Dolphins in the two losses. At Clemson, she posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Alford scored 21 points on 9 of 21 attempts and recorded nine boards against the Bulls.

The spurt has moved Alford to second on the team in scoring (9.0) and fourth in rebounds at a 5.1 clip. Junior Jade Cargill continues to pace the Dolphins in scoring (11.6), rebounds (8.9) and steals (18). She also has had three double-doubles in the last six games.

The Lady Tigers (4-5) earned a 49-40 win against North Florida Monday night at home. They have won three of their last five contests since snapping a three-game losing streak from Nov. 15-23.

Ezinne Kalu leads the Lady Tigers with a 14.0 scoring average, while Andrietta Thomas is second at 11.6 points per game. Erin Hogue is first in rebounds with a 7.7 average.

Savannah State holds a 3-2 lead in the all-time series after downing JU in overtime, 67-64, at home last season. The Dolphins have won both contests played in Jacksonville (2001, 2005).
