JU freshman picks up first weekly honor from the A-Sun
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville freshman Jarvis Haywood (Charlotte, N.C.) was named the Atlantic Sun Co-Newcomer of the Week in an official announcement made by the league office on Tuesday (Jan. 15).
Haywood picks up his first weekly recognition from the A-Sun after averaging 13.5 points while leading JU to a 2-0 record and a share of the conference lead. The Dolphins’ rookie started his week off with a career high 18 points in a triple-overtime win over Kennesaw State on Thursday night.
Just two days later, his go-ahead basket with 1:07 remaining proved to be the deciding factor in a 49-47 JU win over preseason favorite Mercer. Haywood totaled nine points in the game while adding four rebounds.
This season he ranks second on the team and 19th in the league with 10.7 ppg. Haywood shares the honor this week with Northern Kentucky’s Tyler White.
At 4-2 in the A-Sun, Jacksonville returns to action at 7:00 pm on Friday at city rival North Florida. The game can been seen live on CSS Sports and ESPN3.
