Jacksonville Maintains A-Sun Lead With 77-68 Win At North Florida
Dolphins tied for first with Stetson at 5-2
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville men’s basketball team was not to be denied in the latest edition of the SunTrust River City Rumble Friday night at UNF Arena. The Dolphins used a hot shooting second half to pull away from their crosstown rivals and earn a 77-68 win over North Florida.
With the victory JU improves to 5-2 in the league and 10-10 overall while maintaining a tie for the Atlantic Sun lead with Stetson. The Dolphins now hold a 14-4 lead in the all-time series. UNF falls to 3-4 A-Sun and 8-12 overall.
Senior forward Glenn Powell (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) scored 10 of his 14 points and junior guard Keith McDougald (Jacksonville, Fla.) had eight of his 14 points and in a second half that saw the Dolphins shoot a season best 60.9 percent (14-23) from the field. Powell added a team best eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Junior Javon Dawson (Cordele, Ga.) had a team best 17 points on 7-10 from the field. Dawson, who also had six rebounds, kept JU in the game in the first half scoring 13 points in 13 minutes of action.
The highly competitive game featured 11 ties and five lead changes before the Dolphins finally started to pull away around the eight minute mark of the second half following two game tying free throws from McDougald. Senior Russell Powell (Newnan, Ga.) then hit a three-pointer with 7:29 left with the game tied at 56-56, to give the Dolphins a lead they would not relinquish.
UNF cut the deficit back down to one on four separate occasions down the stretch, but each time JU answered on the ensuing possession and never gave the Osperys a chance to take the lead. The Dolphins sealed the game on the glass and then at the foul line rebounding four straight desperation threes by UNF and connecting on 6-8 at the charity stripe.
Parker Smith led UNF with 19 points (4-9 from three).
The Dolphins continue a three-game road swing next weekend with games at East Tennessee State on Thursday and USC Upstate on Saturday.
