In a contest that featured seven lead changes, Erdely bullied her way through the defense with 1:16 remaining to record the game-winner and avenge JU’s loss to Team England last season.
Erdely and junior attacker Morgan Derner each finished three goals for the Dolphins. Derner had seven of JU’s match-best 31 shots. Sophomore midfielder Jess Worchester forced four turnovers to go along with her five ground balls, while junior attacker Brittney Orashen finished with six ground balls and three turnovers.
Leading 10-8 late into the second half, JU senior goalie Karli Tobin picked up two straight saves on three Team England attempts with 2:23 remaining. The Dolphins wouldn’t get out unshaved as a foul opened the door for Sarah Taylor to score on a free-position shot to cut the deficit to 10-9 (2:00).
Another JU foul less than 30 seconds later allowed Katy Bennett to score on a pass from Olivia Wimpenny to tie it a 10-all. The Dolphins couldn’t get a shot off in the final 1:31 to set up overtime.
After each team scored in the first overtime, the Dolphins missed two chances to end the contest in the second overtime with Worchester hitting the post and Erdely missing a shot on an empty net from a turnover by England’s goalie Cat Gaunt.
Team England failed to clear the zone in the third overtime with 1:50 left which opened the door for Erdely’s game-winning goal.
Charlie Finnigan scored three goals to pace Team England offensively, while Taylor and Kirsten Lafferty each had two goals. Ali Smith had four turnovers for her squad in the loss.
Tobin finished with 11 saves between the posts for JU. Sally Keogh and Gaunt combined for eight saves for Team England.
Trailing 2-0 in the first half, the Dolphins got goals from sophomore midfielder Holly Ventimiglia and senior midfielder Nicole Albino within a two-minute stretch to tie the contest. Senior midfielder Rachael Krell put JU up 4-3 on a pass from Kaitlin Stewart with 7:48 left. Team England regained a 5-4 lead before Derner scored on free-position attempt with 14 second left to deadlock the squads at halftime.
The Dolphins return to action officially against Vanderbilt on Feb. 3 at Noon at D.B. Milne Field.
