Dolphins slip into a three-way tie for first in the A-Sun with Stetson & FGCU at 6-3
– The Jacksonville men’s basketball was never quite able to get into a rhythm on Saturday as their four game win streak came to an end with a 79-64 loss at USC Upstate. With the loss, the Dolphins (11-11; 6-3) slip into a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic Sun with Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. JU plays host to both teams on campus at Swisher Gymnasium next week.
Senior forward Glenn Powell
(Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and junior guard Keith McDougald
(Jacksonville, Fla.) each led the Dolphins with 12 points and five rebounds. Freshmen Kordario Fleming
(Memphis, Tenn.) added 11 points and six rebounds for JU.
After scoring the first three points of the game JU fell behind 15-5 five minutes into a contest following a scoring outburst from the Spartans Ty Greene. Greene, who finished with a game high 24 points, scored 13 points in the opening eight minutes of action.
The Dolphins would fight back and eventually grab a 32-31 lead with 3:11 to go before halftime on a fastbreak layup from freshmen Jeremy Bogus (Birmingham, Ala.).
USC Upstate (11-10; 5-3) responded and then scored the final four points of the first half before opening the first five minutes of the second half with a 14-3 run to take control of the game. The Dolphins, who shot 36.7 percent in the second half, would only get as close as 14 the rest of the way.
The Dolphins return home to face Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday and Saturday at Swisher Gymnasium. Listen on 92.5 FM.
