JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville senior distance runner Joane Pierre (Immokalee, Fla.) was named the A-Sun Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career after her impressive performance over the weekend at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational.
Pierre won the first of two events on Sunday in Gainesville, Fla. when she posted a conference leading 4:50.76 in the mile. The time was not only good enough for first place but improved on her previous school record by over three seconds. With little rest, Pierre returned to the track to lead wire-to-wire in the 800m and win in a time of 2:13.41.
“Joane had a nice double last weekend,” said Dolphin head coach Ron Grigg. “She is leading the way for a strong middle distance group and we are all excited to see how fast she will run the 800 meters this weekend at Penn State.”
The Dolphins will now travel to State College, Pa. to take part in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday. This will be the final meet for team before they look to win their record eighth straight conference title at the A-Sun Championships on February 22.
