Dolphins travel to Penn State for the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup

The Jacksonville indoor track & field team will travel to State College, Pa. to participate in the Penn State Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup Saturday for the third straight year.

This will be the final meet for the Dolphins before they head to the Atlantic Sun Championships on February 22 where they will be looking to repeat as champions for the eighth straight year.  The meet field consists of well-known programs from all over the east coast.

"This is a big meet for us,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg.  “We will be in a great facility, with the strongest competition we will see all indoor season.  This is our last meet before the conference championship, and our last chance to improve our individual performances.  We make a big investment of our resources to attend this meet, and our team has always responded in kind with big returns in performance."

Several of the Dolphins are coming off of strong performances at last weekend’s Jimmy Carnes Invitational, most notably senior distance runner Joane Pierre.

She completed the impressive feat of winning both the mile and 800m with almost no rest in between races.  Pierre blew away the field in the mile to win in a time of 4:50.76 which broke her own school record by over three seconds.  She returned moments later to lead wire-to-wire in the 800m and posted a time of 2:13.41.  For her efforts, Pierre was named the A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week.

The Dolphins also took first place in the 4x400m relay.  The team of LaTonya Payne, Charlene Charles, Courtney Walker, and Alexis Taylor won the event in a time of 3.47.63 for the second consecutive year.

The weekend’s competitive field should challenge the Dolphin athletes and create the opportunity for a school record to fall for the third consecutive weekend.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon.
