Jacksonville Comeback Falls Short In 81-78 Loss To Florida Gulf Coast
Dolphins return to action on Thursday at Mercer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A showdown of two of the leaders in the Atlantic Sun proved to be just that on Saturday afternoon as Florida Gulf Coast edged the Jacksonville men’s basketball team, 81-78 in a highly competitive contest at historic Swisher Gymnasium.
The Dolphins (12-12; 7-4) now sit a game back of FGCU (16-8; 8-3) in the A-Sun standings as the two teams entered the game in a four-way tie for first along with Mercer and USC Upstate.
Freshmen Jarvis Haywood (Charlotte, N.C.) led the way for JU with 16 points and six rebounds while junior Dylan Fritsch (Albuquerque, N.M.) shot 4-7 from three and contributed 15 points off the bench.
Down by as many as 10 points with 11 minutes to go, the Dolphins fought back to cut the deficit to a single point an a pair of Russell Powell (Newnan, Ga.) free throws with 1:16 left. On the ensuing possession for FGCU, senior forward Glenn Powell (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) rejected a drive by Sherwood Brown (20 points). The Eagles’ Eddie Murray grabbed the offensive rebound however and was fouled where he went to the line to hit the first of two free throws.
With the chance to tie, the Dolphins missed two free throws on the other end, but gained new life with eight second left when FGCU again hit just one of two from the foul line.
Russell Powell raced the ball up the court, but his heavily contested three was off the mark, ending a six game home venue win streak for JU.
Freshman Kordario Fleming (Memphis, Tenn.) added seven points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Dolphins. Glenn Powell (8 rebounds) and junior guard Keith McDougald (Jacksonville, Fla.) were each in double figures with 10 points a piece.
The Dolphins travel to Mercer on Thursday and Kennesaw State on Saturday next week. Listen on 92.5 FM.
