Women’s soccer inks four on signing day
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After a successful 2012 season, the JU women’s soccer team is looking to continue its success by adding four players for the 2013 season.
The Dolphins added forward Cassie Elmore (Murrieta, CA), midfielder Mary Sturgis (St. Augustine, FL), and defenders Hannah Hartman (Peachtree City, GA) and Lauren Worden (Ronkonkoma, NY) to the 2013 roster.
"I am excited about this 2013 class,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “While it is small in number, I expect big things from them. They have all played at very high levels already and I expect them to make an immediate impact within our program."
Elmore, a forward for Murrieta Valley High School, helped lead her team to a Southwestern Conference title her junior year, while earning All-Conference and Scholar Athlete honors. While playing club soccer for Albion FC San Diego, she led her team in National League play, a Far West Regional final four finish, the National Cup semifinals, and the Cal South Coast League Premier Championship.
“Cassie is an athletic forward that works very hard around the goal,” said Copham. “She causes match-up problems for defenses and creates goal scoring chances.”
Sturgis, an All-Conference player at St. Augustine High School, also plays club soccer for VSI Brandon Flames. She earned a Florida State Cup Championship with the Ponte Vedra Storm in 2008-2009, and a Florida State Cup semifinal showing with Creeks Clash in 2010-2011.
“Mary is a very technical soccer player,” said Copham. “She is a midfielder that gets the ball where it needs to go. She also is a smart player that makes the players around her better.”
Hartman, a four year varsity player at McIntosh High School, earned a 4A GA State Championship in 2011 and 2012. She was also named to the GA High School All-Region team for the 2012 season. Hartman plays club soccer for one of the best teams in the country, Concorde Fire South Elite ECNL. The team was USYSA GA State Champions in 2011 and she helped lead her team to a final four national ECNL spot. In 2012, the team achieved an 8th place finish in ENCL. Hartman has been a GA ODP team member from 2009-2012 and an ODP Region 3 team member in 2011-2012.
“Hannah is a vocal defender that not only defends, but also organizes those around her,” said Copham. “Her leadership has helped every team she has been on be successful. Hannah also brings a physical presence to the back line.”
Worden, a defender from Connetquot High School, led her team to a league championship in 2010 while being named All-League and All-Conference both her junior and senior year. She plays club soccer with the Albertson Elite Fury ECNL, who are ranked 7th in Northeast conference standings, and 16th in the National Flight B standings. Worden also competed for the Eastern NY ODP team in 2011-2012.
“Lauren is a physical defender that competes at multiple positions,” said Copham. “Her versatility and athleticism will allow her to compete for time at numerous spots in the back line.”
