Volleyball names Marcela Oliveira as assistant coach
Jacksonville University volleyball head coach Michelle Collier has added former University of South Florida standout Marcela Oliveria as assistant coach effective for the spring.
Oliveria comes to JU after coaching at the Top Select Volleyball Academy in Orlando.
“We are thrilled to have Marcela join our JU Family,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “She is a tremendous addition to our staff who will make an immediate impact on our volleyball program and the direction we are going. She will be a great role model to our players, and her in-state and international connections will help our recruiting tremendously. On top of all that, she is a wonderful person and we welcome her and her family with open arms.”
While at Top Select Volleyball Academy, Oliveria coached the 12- and 18-year old squads. She was the head junior varsity coach and an assistant on the varsity team at Santa Fe Catholic High School before joining Top Select.
Her other club circuit coaching spots have included time with the Tampa Bay One Volleyball Club and The ampa Bay Juniors Volleyball Club. She has also served as a teacher at four different schools in Tampa.
Prior to returning to central Florida, Oliveria started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for the 2010 season. She worked specifically with the outside hitters and assisted with recruiting.
“I am very excited to join the JU volleyball family,” Oliveria said. “This is going to be such a great experience and I cannot wait to get in the gym to start working. Volleyball has been my passion ever since I started playing when I was seven-years old. It has given me so much and it has allowed me to go places I would have never imagined. Now it's time for me to give back to the sport.”
As a player, Oliveria was an outside hitter for the Bulls from 2006-09 where she earned three Big East all-conference honors. She also received three all-region and all-America (a program first) accolades. Prior to the 2009 campaign, Oliveria was tabbed conference preseason Player of the Year.
Oliveria finished her Bulls’ career ranked second all-time in kills (1,801) behind Coach Collier’s program record 2,729 kills. She is also fourth in aces with 219 and ninth in digs at 1,079.
Following her collegiate career, Oliveria played professionally for AYS Volleyball in Argentina for the 2011 season. She now plays for team Florida Wave in the Premier Volleyball League.
Oliveria graduated from USF in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education. She replaces Susie Jangada who joined the staff at Arkansas State.
