The Jacksonville women’s lacrosse team welcomes San Diego State to the First Coast on Saturday for a 12:00 pm contest. The Dolphins are coming off a 15-4 loss to No. 3 Florida on Wednesday.
The Florida contest marked the second top five opponent for JU in three games this season. The Dolphins currently own the ninth most challenging schedule in the nation according to the latest Laxpower.com strength of schedule rankings.
“San Diego State will be traveling to Jacksonville for the first time in program history, and we can’t wait to welcome a west coast team to the east,” said senior goalie Karli Tobin (Moorestown, N.J.).
“It will be a great experience for us to show our fast paced style of experienced play to a second year program. Just four years ago we were that new program and now we are the veterans!”
Saturday’s contest marks the 2013 season opener for the Aztecs which made its program debut in 2012. A member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, San Diego State was picked fifth out of nine teams in the league’s preseason poll following a 5-10 campaign last spring.
“Knowing that San Diego State is a second year program and thinking of where we were during our second year at JU brings back great memories and allows us to see the strides we have made,” said senior Rachel Hannon (Annapolis, Md.) “As with any game we play, the team is excited to host SDSU. We look forward to the game and playing our system.”
Senior Amanda Hurley (Columbus, Ga.) recorded her second hat trick in as many games against Florida on Wednesday. Hurley scored three goals in the contest and leads the team with eight goals on nine shot attempts this season. Junior attacker Nikki Erdely (Cumming, Ga.) accounted for the other JU score against Florida.
“We had a few mistakes on Wednesday that are correctable, said JU Head Coach Mindy McCord. “Our goal against San Diego State is to continue to focus on our system and what we do well. When we do that we have a chance to be successful against any team.”
