Women’s basketball hosts cross-town rival North Florida Saturday
The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team is looking for the ball to bounce its way Saturday when it hosts North Florida in Swisher Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
The Dolphins (7-17, 3-10 A-Sun) is looking to break a season-long seven-game losing streak that started with the Ospreys (10-14, 6-7) on Jan. 19.
“We are ready to get back on the winning track,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We just need one win to get us jump started. It was a close game on their court and we know it will be a dog fight until the end.”
The Dolphins lost two close contests to Kennesaw State, 57-51, and Mercer, 68-61, in their recent road trip to Georgia last weekend.
Despite the losses, freshman Queen Alford continues to be the catalyst for the Dolphins. Alford is averaging a team-best 12.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and five blocks in the last six contests. She led JU with 14 points against Kennesaw State before totaling 10 points and a season-best 15 boards at Mercer.
Like JU, the Ospreys (10-14, 6-7) lost both contests in Georgia last week to Mercer, 51-49, and Kennesaw State, 50-40. UNF has lost four of the last five games overall.
Ki Conner leads the Ospreys with a 9.3 average, while Jadhken Kerr is second with 8.2 points a game. Larkira Jones is averaging 9.0 rebounds in the post to lead UNF.
On Jan. 19, the Ospreys started the Dolphins’ streak with a 66-63 win at UNF arena. The Dolphins trimmed down a 15-point second half deficit, but missed a game-tying three in the final seconds for the loss.
The Ospreys have won six of the last seven games over JU, including hitting a shot at the buzzer for a 46-44 win in their last trip to Swisher Gym. JU’s last regular season win against UNF was a 64-58 overtime decision at home on Jan. 18, 2010.
JU will wear its special pink uniforms Saturday as part of the Play4Kay week in its breast cancer awareness initiative. They also wore the uniforms at Mercer on Monday.
