Softball shut out by Eastern Michigan to wrap first day of FAU Classic
Eastern Michigan used two four-run innings to down the Jacksonville University softball, 8-0 (5), Friday afternoon at the FAU Classic.
The Eagles (3-3) scored six of the eight runs with two outs to snap the Dolphins’ (11-5) three-game-winning streak. Nellie Coquillard had three RBI to pace the Eastern Michigan offense, while Courtney Nicholson had a two-run triple to help the cause.
“We didn’t come with our best effort,” JU head coach Ali Higgs said. “We couldn’t get the last out we needed to stop their two big innings. I am happy we got the split today and looking forward to the two games we have tomorrow.”
Eaglers’ starter Jenna Ignowski (2-0) scattered four hits and struck out four batters in five innings to earn the win.
Freshman Taylor Rossman (1-3) was tagged with the loss for JU after allowing three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings. Freshman Cecile Gomez allowed five runs on seven hits in four relief innings.
In the bottom of the first inning, Rossman retired the first two hitters before allowing a double to Nicholson. The Eagles followed with consecutive run-scoring singles for the 2-0 lead. Gomez relieved Rossman, but surrendered a two-run homer to Coquillard to cap the Eagles’ big inning.
Senior Sarah Simon led off the fourth inning with a single down the right field line for JU. After a flyout, the Eagles threw out JU pinch runner Jackie DiPiazza stealing and got junior Karson Tuck to ground out to end the inning.
Gomez allowed consecutive one-out singles to Abby Davidson and Katy Blaharski in the fifth inning. Nicholson cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a triple. Amanda Stanton followed with an RBI single, while Coquillard had an RBI double to batters later to secure the rule-run win.
The Dolphins continue the classic tomorrow against Michigan State at 4 p.m. JU will also play host Florida Atlantic at 8 p.m. Fans can follow the action through live stats at JUDolphins.com.
