The UCF Knights scored an unearned run in the top half of the fourth inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead on starting pitching Alex McRae (West Allis, Wisc.).
The Dolphins quickly answered back in the bottom half of the fourth. Braddock Rowe (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled with one out. Drew Luther (Fullerton, Ca.) then followed with a single to right advancing Rowe to second. Following a strike out Scott Schaub (Ocala, Fla.) walked loading the bases for Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, NY.). Loosen then singled down the right field line scoring Rowe and Luther to put the Dolphins up 2-1.
The Knights answered back immediately scoring an unearned run in the top half of the fifth inning to knot the game at 2-2.
UCF scored a pair of runs in the sixth off Zach Gordon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) who replaced McRae. Leading off the sixth Austin Johnson homered to left. The Knights also pushed across an unearned run to expand the lead to 4-2.
The Dolphins answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Luther drew a one out walk. Following a ground out Loosen and Schaub both walked loading the bases for freshman Kris Molter (Jacksonville, Fla.). Molter then ripped a 2-2 pitch to right center scoring Luther and Loosen to tie the game at 4-4.
The game turned in into a pitchers duel until the ninth. UCF scored a pair of runs on two doubles to make the score 6-4.
The Dolphins went in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game with the final score of 6-4.
Alex McRae started for the Dolphins going five innings and not allowing an earned run. He was followed by Gordon who went three innings allowing two runs only one of which was earned. Drew Woods (0-2) (Jacksonville, Fla.) was credited with the hard luck loss after going 2/3 of an inning allowing two run, both earned. Woods was hampered by a wind added double to left that started the Knights rally.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Wednesday from Daytona, Fla. as they face the Bethune Cookman Wildcats at 6pm.
