JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Going pitch for pitch with one of the most highly touted pitchers in the NCAA, Chris Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) led the Dolphins to an exciting 3-2 win over the East Carolina Pirates at John Sessions stadium Friday night.

The JU Dolphins used excellent pitching, solid fielding and timely hitting to take game one of the three game series against the ECU Pirates (9-8).

The Dolphins struck early off ECU starter Jeff Hoffman (2-2). Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) led of the first inning with a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Luther (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton College). Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) grounded to second advancing Howck to third. Howck then scored on a wild pitch by Hoffman.

ECU wasted no time answering back. The Pirates scored an earned run on two hits in the top half of the second inning to knot the game at 1-1.

The game then turned to a pitchers duel as neither team could push a run across until the Dolphins half of the seventh inning.

Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) coaxed a one out walk and advanced to second on a balk. Howck was then intentionally walked. Luther then followed with a walk to load the bases. Koslowski then ripped a towering double to straight away center scoring two Dolphins and putting them up 3-1.

That was all that the Dolphins pitching staff would need. Anderson pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs, striking out five and walking only two. Anderson ran into trouble in the top half of the eighth and was replaced by Will Flor (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) who struck out the only batter he faced limiting the Pirates to only one run in the eighth. Adam Maxon (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) came in and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the 2013 season.

Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) in his first game back since a leg injury went 2-4 and Josh Baker (Sussez, Wis./University School) added a bunt single in the fourth.

Anderson entered the game tied for second nationally in strikeouts with 45. He now has 50 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings pitched on the season.
