JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The JU Dolphins could not overcome a four run first inning by the East Carolina Pirates Sunday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.

The ECU Pirates scored four runs in the top half of the first inning on two hits and one Dolphin error. Dolphin starting pitcher Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) struggled with his control in the inning allowing three Pirates to reach by base on balls.

Kris Molter (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) homered to lead off the bottom of the third inning for the Dolphins to cut the lead to 4-1.

ECU answered back with a solo home run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to increase the lead to 5-1 off McRae.

The Dolphins rallied in the fifth for two runs. Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) reached on a one out walk. Braddock Rowe (Jacksonville, Fla./South Georgia College) was hit by a pitch. Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) singled to right scoring Houck and advancing Rowe to third. Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 5-3 game.

McRae then found his groove. He retired nine Pirates in a row following the homer in the fifth.

The Dolphins would score again in the seventh. Koslowski had a one out triple and scored on a North ground out to first making it a 5-4 game.

The Dolphins could get no closer. The Pirates added and insurance run in the ninth and held on for the win.

McRae (1-2) was charged with the loss. Koslowski finished the day with three hits and an RBI to lead the Dolphins offensively. Coach Tim Montez said “ we are a young team, we made some strides this week that may not have shown in the win column. We are now playing with more emotion, we started to do some of the little things better that will make us better in upcoming conference play”.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Wednesday at John Sessions Stadium. The UCF Knights come to town for a 12:00PM start. You can follow the Dolphins live on by clicking the LIVE SCORING link.
