Jessica Welch fires opening round 67 to tie for lead at A-Sun Golf Championship
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - Jessica Welch (Lavonia, Ga.) fired a JU record 5 under par 67 to tie for the first round lead at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship held at the Par 72 (6198 yard) Pine Lakes Golf Club.
Welch recorded eight birdies on the day to break the JU single round record that she shared with fellow Dolphin Natalie Schemtt (Evansville, Ind.). The pair had both carded 3-under par 69’s in competition to share the JU all time record.
The Dolphins as a team opened with a season low 18-hole total of 5-over par 293 to finish in second place in the ten-team championship.
Francesca Yong (Malaysia) opened with a 2-over par 74 tying her for 11th overall. Carlie Gelhausen (Noblesville, Ind.) opened with a 3 -over par 75 to tie for 14th. Natalie Schmett (Evansville, Ind.) opened with a 5-over 77 to tie for 24th. The Dolphins scoring was rounded out by Christina Paulsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) who opened with a score of 8-over par 80 to tie for 40th overall.
The Dolphins team total of 293 is the second lowest 18-hole team total in program history second only to a 292 recorded in 2011.
The ETSU Lady Bucs are the first round team leader with an opening round 1-under par 287. The Mercer Bears are in third place with a 9-over par 297.
