MACON, Ga.— Seniors Charlene Charles and Bienna Freeman were named to the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team on Monday.
The pair was a key component to the Dolphins capturing their eighth straight outdoor title and 16th straight track championship.
Charles, a Communications major with a 3.83 GPA, took home the heptathlon title after overcoming a serious injury sustained at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Not only did she win the heptathlon, but Charles also scored in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump to contribute 21.5 points to the total team score. She was one of four members of the All-Academic team that was a unanimous selection.
Freeman, an Exercise Science major with a 3.54 GPA, finished first in the 800m and the 4x400m relay as well as second in the 1500m. In total she added 20.5 points to the Dolphins’ overall score. With her time of 2:04.8 in the 800m this season, Freeman ranks 10th nationally and has qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminaries.
“Charlene and Bienna should both be very proud that the excellent results they have produced in the classroom and on the track are being recognized,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “They can be held up as great examples of what focused hard work can accomplish. They represent all things good about Jacksonville University.”
