GREENSBORO, N.C.—Seniors Bienna Freeman and Joane Pierre both finished in the top three of their 800m semifinal heats Friday to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Pierre was the first to run in heat one and finished with a time of 2:06.71 to finish third and earn the automatic qualifier to the Championships in Eugene, Ore. Freeman followed with a 2:07.46 in the third and final heat to finish third and join Pierre in advancing to the next round.
Jacksonville joined LSU as the only school sending two athletes to the final rounds in the 800m.
In the first round of the 100m hurdles, sophomore Shanique Walker recovered after stumbling on the first hurdle to finish second in her heat with a time of 13.33 to automatically advance to the next round. She will race Saturday in the semifinals for her chance to join Freeman and Pierre at the Championships.
Atlantic Sun Track Athlete of the Year Courtney Walker competed in the preliminary round of the 200m and finished fifth in her heat. Her time of 24.00 was 27th overall and did not qualify her for the next round of competition.
For the second straight year, the Dolphins will have at least one representative at the NCAA Championships.
