EUGENE, Ore.—Seniors Bienna Freeman and Joane Pierre raced in the preliminary round of the 800 meters Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Freeman finished 10th overall while Pierre was 19th.
Freeman took part in the first of the three heats for the event. As the race began, she got shuffled to the back of the pack and was in sixth place after the first lap. A surge down the backstretch of the second lap gave Freeman an opportunity to move up and she did just that finishing in third in her heat with a time of 2:04.71. With the top two finishers of each heat automatically advancing to the finals, Freeman had to hope she had one of the next two fastest times out of the three heats to move on. Unfortunately she just missed out on advancing to the finals finishing with the 10th fastest time.
Pierre took to the track for the third and final heat. Starting from the second lane, Pierre came out of the blocks fast, staying near the front of the pack. She remained with the race leaders for much of the first lap and into the second before she started to fade and finished in sixth with a time of 2:08.59. Pierre finished with the 19th fastest time in the event.
Although Freeman and Pierre’s Championships are over, fellow Dolphin Shanique Walker is still in action for JU, competing in the 100m hurdles. She will race in the preliminary round on Thursday at 8:05 pm eastern time. Fans can watch by clicking on the live stream link.
