In 29 starts last season, Powell led the Dolphins in blocks (37), while ranking second in rebounds (6.4) and third in scoring (10.9). He had four double-doubles and finished with at least 10 points in seven of the final nine games. The Dolphins have had at least one forward on the preseason all-conference squad in the last five seasons.
“We are excited that Glenn was selected for the preseason all-conference team,” JU head coach Cliff Warren said. “It’s great that he got recognized by his peers. We are expecting big things from Glenn this season.”
The Dolphins were picked to finish seventh in both of the coaches and media preseason polls.
Mercer and USC Upstate took the top two spots, respectively, in both polls, while the Bears were voted the preseason tournament champion each time.
In the coaches poll, the Bears earned 95 points (six first-place votes), while the Spartans secured 89 points and three first-place votes for second place. Florida Gulf Coast (75), North Florida (70) and East Tennessee State (54) made up the rest of the top five, while Stetson, JU, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State and Northern Kentucky rounded out the group.
After Mercer’s and USC Upstate’s spots in the media poll, Florida Gulf Coast was picked third with 198 points and three first-place votes. ETSU (180) and North Florida (167) rounded out the top five, while Stetson, JU, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State and Northern Kentucky closed out the poll again.
“We are more concerned where we are going to finish in March than where we are predicted to finish in September,” Warren said.
The Dolphins open the 2012-13 season at Georgia Nov. 9, in Athens, Ga. They will host Trinity Baptist College in the home opener Nov. 13 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
