Led by a career-best tying 2-under par 70 by Trey Douglas, the Jacksonville men’s golf team finished fifth in its season opener at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate.
Douglas’s 70 was his second of the tournament on the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina, tying him for sixth individually at 4-under par, three shots behind the three-way tie for the individual championship.
Gardner-Webb won the 16-team event at 14-under par for the week, with JU finishing at 4-over par.
“There are a lot of positives for us coming out of this event,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “Our guys know where their game is in tournament conditions now and it gives us a solid base to work from for the rest of the season.”
Jamey Salmon and Dillon Batsel each carded a one-over par, 73, to tie each other for 23rd at one-over par for the event. Colin Monagle had a 7-over par ,79, to tie for 60th at 10-over par while Brett McKinnon shot a 3-over par, 75, to tie for 68th at 12-over par.
