Dolphins begin MAAC play on Saturday against Siena

– A number of missed scoring opportunities plagued Jacksonville on Tuesday afternoon as the men’s lacrosse team dropped an 11-6 non-conference game to Robert Morris.

JU (2-3) was led by senior TJ Kenary (Alpharetta, Ga.) with two goals as the Dolphins attempted 39 shots for the game and out shot RMU (3-2) 21-17 in the first half.

“We executed a lot of good things, but when it came time to finish the play on the offensive end we threw the ball into the goalie’s stick or hit him right in the chest,” said JU Head Coach Guy Van Arsdale. “The shots we got were very high quality shots and we have to put those away.”

The Dolphins fell into a 2-0 hole after the Colonials struck twice in the first seven minutes. Goals from sophomores Ari Waffle (Manlius, N.Y.) and Quint Miller (Lancaster, Pa.) later in the first quarter tied the game for JU, but RMU ‘s Tyler Digby closed the period with one of his four goals on the day.

The Colonials scored again 90 seconds into the second quarter and left the Dolphins trying to play catch-up the rest of the way. Junior David Goldman (Baltimore, Md.) and Kenary scored in the second period for JU, which fell behind 6-4 at halftime.

In the second half, the Dolphins had one shot attempted saved and another hit the post in the opening three minutes of play only to come up empty. The Colonials then scored on the other end after the second JU miss to extend the advantage to 7-4.

“That was the big difference in the game,” said Van Arsdale. “Their ability to hit the shots that they had and our inability to hit those shots. We just have to finish the ball better than we did today.”

Senior Dan McNulty (Fairfax, Va.) won 13 of 21 (62 percent) faceoffs and added six ground balls for the Dolphins.  Senior Pete DeLuca (Millersville, Pa.) made a season high 17 saves in goal for JU.
JU returns to action on Saturday against Siena on D.B. Milne Field. Game time is 12:00 pm. The Dolphins will honor Corey Lovrich by retiring his #88 jersey before the game.
