OAK RIDGE, Tn.—The JU men’s rowing team had a good showing in the finals of the Southeast Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta on Sunday.
Overall, the Dolphins had two fifth place finishes in the A finals as well as a first place finish in a B final.
The Freshmen 8 was the first to see action for JU. The lineup of Angelo Santiago (coxswain), Anthony Rzepka, Tom Harrison, Erik Fournier, Billy Macomber, Chris Searcy, Garth Greene, Ellis Harr, and Andrew Stebbins finished fifth in its A final in a time of 6:24.10. They beat such programs as Washington, UNC, Georgia Tech, Colorado, and Vanderbilt.
The Varsity4 was the next competition for the Dolphins. The lineup of Maycee Dioneda (coxswain), Sean Carney, Shane Kennedy, Andrew Bechtold, and Bernardas Vingilis won its heat by one second with a time of 6:51.00. Their time was the sixth fastest in the event overall that day.
The final race for the Dolphins was the Varsity 8. David Waugh (coxswain), Scott Del Vecchio, Jared Low, Preston Weinard, Scott Waitley, Nathan Esterline, Jeremy Sobiech, Brian Cosmillo, and Chase Rowe came in fifth in the A final of the event edging out sixth place UNC by .30 of a second with a time of 6:01.40.
With the successful meet behind them, the Dolphins will now turn their attention the MAAC Championships next weekend in Mercer Lake, N.J.
