Women's hoops falls at Auburn
The JU women’s basketball team ended the non-conference schedule with an 85-49 loss to Auburn Saturday afternoon at Auburn Arena.
The Tigers (10-2) picked up 54 points in the paint to set up their seventh straight win. Tra’cee Tanner scored 21 points off the bench to lead the Auburn offense, while Tyrese Tanner and Blanche Alverson each had 16 points for the Tigers.
“We played a team on a very good roll today,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We had trouble matching their size inside. The break these next few days will allow us to get some rest before starting A-Sun play on Dec. 31.”
Freshmen Briona Brown (13) and Queen Alford (10) each scored double-digits for the Dolphins (4-7), who finished shooting 25.9 percent (15-59) from the floor. The Tigers had a 54.8 field goal percentage and scored 27 points on 20 JU turnovers.
In the first half, the Dolphins stayed within a bucket for the first two minutes until a 14-4 stretch, capped on a Peyton Davis layup, gave the Tigers a 20-7 lead (11:20). A jumper from junior Ronisha Mitchell cut the JU deficit to 27-14 (7:25), but Auburn used a 14-3 run to end the half and put the game out of reach.
Hasina Muhammad scored 10 points to round out the Tigers in double digits. Davis finished with eight points, while Najat Ouardad added a game-best nine assists.
The Tigers increased their lead to 25 early into the second half on a Tra’cee Tanner layup. Auburn held JU scoreless in the final five minutes for a 13-0 run to close out the day.
Senior Tracie Sneed and junior Stephanie Edwards each finished with seven points for JU. Sneed also had 11 boards.
The Dolphins will ring in the New Year against A-Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky Dec. 31 in the Veterans Memorial Arena at 5 p.m.
