Two standout performances by Jacksonville University women’s basketball freshman Queen Alford helped her claim A-Sun Newcomer of the Week honors for the first time Tuesday from the league office.

Alford opened the week with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals in the Dolphins overtime win against East Tennessee State (2/23). Last night, she scored a season-best 25 points (12-15 FG) and had six boards to lead JU past USC Upstate to secure a berth into the A-Sun Tournament.

“We are very happy for Queen,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “She is a very special player with a lot of potential. We look forward to her getting better and helping us win more games in the future.”

Alford has scored in double-figures in eight of the last nine games, including the last seven in a row. She has also had at least six rebounds in six of those nine contests. She leads the team and all A-Sun freshman with a 11.4 scoring average. Alford also is tied for the lead among A-Sun freshman with a 6.1 clip.

The Decatur, Ga., native is the second JU freshman to earn the newcomer accolade after teammate Briona Brown (11/27 & 1/15) picked up two honors earlier this season.

The Dolphins end the regular season on the road starting Thursday against Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3.com.
