MACON, Ga. – Freshman guard Queen Alford (Decatur, Ga.) achieved a program first for Jacksonville women’s basketball as she was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. Alford also earned Second Team All-A-Sun and Freshmen Team accolades as the conference handed out its 2013 post-season awards on Tuesday.

Alford led JU this season with 11.7 points while adding 6.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. The A-Sun Newcomer of the Week the final two weeks of the regular season, she elevated her game over the second half of conference play averaging 16.7 points and 8.6 rebounds over the final nine games. Alford also shot 51 percent from the field and a sizzling 63 percent (15-24) from beyond the arc during the stretch.

Behind her play at the end of the year, the Dolphins won four of their final five games to finish in a tie for fifth in the A-Sun standings.

JU begins the A-Sun Tournament as the sixth seed and will face the third seed Mercer in the quarterfinals at 12:00 pm on Thursday.
