Plenty to work for as WLAX fall drills begin
Coming off last season’s National Lacrosse Conference championship and with plenty, plenty to look forward to, the JU women’s lacrosse team has begun fall drills with a greater sense of urgency than any time in the past.
The reasons for this being a critical fall are twofold: in 2013 the Dolphins will be part of the new Atlantic-Sun Conference and the automatic berth it will provide to the NCAA tournament and there really won’t be a lot of practice time heading into next season’s upgraded schedule.
“This fall, over any other fall, we are more conscientious that everything we do is going to matter more,’’ coach Mindy McCord said. “We are opening up with Syracuse on Jan. 13 and don’t get that five-week preseason before we start our first game.’’
While McCord and her staff will attempt to instill a greater sense of urgency in the fall drills, the “normal’’ individual and team objectives must be met.
“Our objective for the fall is player development,’’ McCord said. “We call it the Player Development Series and it’s about being able to individually develop skill sets that help the players build confidence in their position, thus, build more confidence in their individual play.’’
And, for new players, there is integration into the JU system.
“We also have an introduction of our systems and being able to teach the whole parts of our system,’’ she said. “And, being able to break that down and speed and strength development are our number one goals. The freshmen are working to learn the system from a technical standpoint and to be able to put it together in a whole part.’’
The bottom line, McCord said, is making every minute count while casting an eye toward early 2013.
“One of key components,’’ she said, “is being conscientious that the work they do now will make a difference then and I think is a great motivator.’’
Practices go five days a week and there are plenty of games to be played.
This weekend, the team will have a Green and Gold Scrimmage; Oct. 13 a trip to the University of Florida will see same-day games against the Gators and Winthrop and on Parents Weekend, Oct. 20, the team will entertain Florida Southern. Finally, Nov. 3 will have the fall ending contest with the Division I All Stars. All home games are on campus and free of charge.
