Dolphins ready for cross-town rivals
Friday night the Jacksonville University women’s soccer team will travel down 9-A to take on arch rival UNF with a River City Rumble point and first place in the Atlantic Sun on the line.
The Dolphins (5-4-1, 2-0-0 A-Sun) enter tonight’s match with a four game winning streak against the Ospreys including a 2-1 victory at the Ashley Sports Complex last season.
The stakes are high as it is with both teams holding an identical 2-0-0 conference record and the chance to remain in first place, but the yearlong bragging rights that go to the winner are sure to ratchet up the game’s intensity to a whole other level.
“With the schools only ten minutes apart, our girls know a lot of their girls,” said head coach Brian Copham. “A lot of them play in summer leagues together and grew up playing club and high school soccer together so the teams are not strangers. This is the game that they take with them for the next 364 days until we play again because we are in the same town, in the same restaurants and places and everything like that. The game is always a lot of fun and always has great fan support. It is a great rivalry.”
JU has strung together three straight wins with major contributions coming from the Weckhurst sisters. Freshman forward Marie has scored a goal in each of the past three games and leads the team with four on the season and has done her damage coming off the bench as a substitution. Her older sister Raquel has a goal of her own and leads the way with four assists.
UNF is led by Thea Linkfield and Carolina Lencina. Linkfield has tallied four goals and two assists in 11 games while Lencina has three goals and three assists. The Ospreys have won two straight to start conference play including a 3-2 overtime victory at Northern Kentucky their last time out.
The game is set for 7:00 p.m. Fans unable to attend can watch the action live on ASun.tv as well as follow the live stats.
