Dolphins complete sweep of ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After taking both games of the doubleheader on Saturday, the JU softball team completed the series sweep of ETSU beating the Bucs 3-2 on Sunday.

The Dolphins (19-8, 5-1 A-Sun) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a late inning charge from ETSU (7-15, 0-6 A-Sun) to take the third game of the series between the two Atlantic Sun foes.

Freshman pitcher Cecile Gomez (7-0) once again held the Bucs offense in check for much of the day scattering six hits across 5.1 innings of work.

JU got on the board early in the top of the first thanks to second baseman Codi Kelly’s second home run of the weekend.

The Dolphins were able to double their lead in the fourth when short stop Karson Tuck went deep for her third home run of the season to put JU up 2-0.

ETSU was finally able to crack through and get to Gomez in the bottom of the fifth after two singles and an error allowed a run to score to cut the Dolphin lead to just one.

JU quickly responded in the top of the sixth.

After a leadoff walk, Tuck singled to give JU runners on first and second.  A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third to bring up right fielder Sable Lee.  She singled to bring home the runner from third and put JU back up by two.

The Bucs did not back down however as they nearly tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Two singles sandwiched around a fielder’s choice gave ETSU runners on first and second with one out.  The next batter hit a double to left center that brought a run home and gave the Bucs two runners in scoring position.  Dolphin head coach Ali Higgs had seen enough and went to the bullpen bringing on Victoria Brown in relief.  Brown promptly struck out the first batter she faced followed by a ground out to get the Dolphins out of the jam and send the game into the seventh with JU leading 3-2.

After JU was unable to add to its lead in the top half of the seventh, Brown returned to the mound and got three outs to pick up her first save of the season.

The Dolphins return to action on March 20 when they host Cornell for  a midweek out of conference double header.  First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
