Jewell Dobson paced three Bisons’ (5-8, 2-0 A-Sun) in double-digit kills with 15. Lauren Ford (13) and Kaycee Green (12) each put up close numbers in kills as Lipscomb finished hitting .367 (46-10-98).
The Dolphins (2-12, 0-1) opened the match hitting -.074 and committed 28 total errors in the loss. Sophomore Taylor Nyquist recorded 10 kills to lead the JU offense.
“We had another tough start,” JU head coach Michelle Collie said. “We can’t come out slow against a team of this caliber. I thought we played better in the next two sets and we will build on some of that momentum tomorrow.”
In the first set, the Dolphins cut an early deficit to 6-3 on a Lipscomb error. The Bisons broke it open with a 13-4 run, capped on three Sophie Kellerman aces, for a 19-7 advantage. Lipscomb took six of the next eight points to secure the set.
In the second set, the Bisons gained a 10-5 lead on a block from Green and Claire Peterson. Ford made it a 13-8 advantage on a kill to force a JU timeout. A kill from freshman Gabriela Roman and an attack error helped the Dolphins cut the deficit to 15-11. Ford later extended the Bisons lead to 22-17 with a kill. After another JU timeout, the Dolphins closed the gap to 24-20 before Ford added a kill to wrap the set.
In the third set, Nyquist tied it early at seven with a kill. The Dolphins remained close until two errors and a Dobson kill gave the Bisons a 15-10 lead. JU called a timeout, but Lipscomb outscored the Dolphins, 10-7, the rest of the way to earn the win.
The Dolphins wrap the trip tomorrow at Northern Kentucky at 3 p.m. Fans can follow the action through the live links at JUDolphins.com.
