Three Game Series With Rutgers Starts With Saturday DH
Jacksonville returns action at Sessions Stadium this weekend hosting a three-game series against Rutgers starting with a double header on Saturday afternoon.
The power of the Dolphins’ offense showed its capabilities in the early on in Tuesday night’s match up-against No. 5 Florida State. Jacksonville held a 6-3 lead after the first three innings and ended the night racking up a season high 11 hits in front of a capacity crowd of 3,000 at Sessions.
Eight of the nine starters had a hit against the Seminoles on Tuesday, including Drew Luther who paced the Dolphins going 3-for-5. Luther is now 5-for-9 (.556) with two runs scores and a RBI in the last two games.
RHP Alex McRae will once again open the weekend series for Jacksonville. After allowing three runs in the first two innings, McRae tossed three straight shutout innings in the season opener at No. 19 TCU to end the night with 5 IP and three runs on six hits and four strikeouts. He will be opposite Howie Brey for Rutgers. Brey earned a no decision in the Scarlet Knights’ season opener at FIU last week after allowing two runs on one hit and five walks in five innings of a 7-6 Rutgers loss.
In game two Saturday the Reigning Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week, RHP Justin Russell will start opposite Kyle Driscoll of Rutgers. Last Sunday, Russell tossed seven shutout innings on the way to a 2-0 Jacksonville win at No. 19 TCU. The Dolphins’ RHP Zach Gordon will then close out the series for Jacksonville on Sunday when he is matched up against Kevin Baxter. Baxter allowed two unearned runs on four hits in five innings of a 5-4 Rutgers loss at FIU last Sunday.
For the first time in over 30 years Rutgers will have a new Head Coach on the bench this weekend. After racking up nearly 1,100 wins during his career Fred Hill announced his retirement from coaching. Assistant Joe Litterio has been promoted to head baseball coach for Rutgers, becoming only the third different head coach for the program since 1961. The Dolphins are 6-0 all-time against a Litterio lead a team at Sessions Stadium, the former Head Coach at Wagner College made visits with the Seahawks to Jacksonville in 2006, 2010 and 2011.

This weekend’s series marks the third ever meeting between the two teams. They first met in 1968, a 1-0 Jacksonville win in Florida. Rutgers evened the series in 2003 defeating the Dolphins 8-5 in an elimination game of the 2003 NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
Next Up For Jacksonville
The Dolphins continue their 12 game home stand with a pair of mid-week games against UCF on Tuesday and Florida A&M on Wednesday.
Maxon Closing in on Dolphins Appearances record
Senior Adam Maxon now has 88 career appearances to his credit. Maxon needs just one appearances to equal the Jacksonville school record currently held by Joel Hegeman (1996-99) who appeared in 89 games.
