Ready All, Row!
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – April will be and has been an eventful month for the Jacksonville University men’s rowing program. With one championship regatta down, and a state trophy in tow, JU will participate in two others before the month’s end. This weekend, the men journey to Tennessee to race in the Southeast Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) championships.
On Friday, April 18 Dolphin crews will race in qualifying heats before advancing to Saturday’s semifinals and finals.
As the first of four JU races on the day, the men’s pair will kick off the event in a time trial at 1:10 p.m. Later, the Novice Eight crew will maneuver the waters of Melton Hill Lake against Virginia, Virginia Tech, Texas, Alabama and Miami-Ohio at 3:43 p.m. and the Varsity Four boat will face Washington, Clemson, Samford and Tennessee-Chattanooga at 5:09 p.m. Concluding the qualifiers for Jacksonville will be the Varsity Eight crew at 6:09 p.m., they will race against Clemson, Florida Tech, North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Miami-Ohio.
“We are very excited for SIRA's,” said Head Coach Montia Rice. “Our Freshmen 8 and our Varsity 8 have been preparing well and as long as they keep that focus and connect well together they should have a very good weekend. We are very pleased in the way the Varsity 4 has been moving and focusing the past two weeks. We have high hopes for them and believe they can do very well as long as they keep their focus. Last but not least the pair, which is made up of two novices, look to make into a final. There are 14 boats and only 12 can make it to the A B final. SIRA's looks to be tough, but it always is and we look forward to taking it on and giving our best effort.
Following this trip, the Dolphins head east to New Jersey for the MAAC Championships on April 26.
