Comeback Falls Short as Dolphins are Defeated on the Road

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Turnovers and uncharacteristic shooting in the first half plagued the Dolphins as they fell on the road to Bethune-Cookman by a score of 57-49.

In a slow shooting start from both sides, the teams were deadlocked at four points apiece five minutes into the opening period. Tying twice more in the succeeding three minutes, the Lady Wildcats distanced themselves from the Fins with a slight 14-9 advantage with 9:37 on the clock.

Three unanswered Dolphin baskets allowed the Fins to tie the contest once more at 16-16 (5:59), but a 12-4 B-CU run in the closing minutes of the frame allowed the Wildcats to take a 28-20 lead into the locker room.

At the half, though JU outrebounded the Cats 21-16, they had also committed 15 turnovers.

Five baskets from senior guard Chastity René Taylor including three shots from downtown pushed the Cats to a 43-22 lead with 14:05 remaining in the contest.

Dolphin defense held B-CU scoreless for the following six minutes and closed the gap to 10 on the opposite side of the floor with an 11-0 run, 43-33 (9:09).

At 6:41, a three-pointer from freshman guard Sherranda Reddick and jumper from senior guard Stephanie Edwards pulled the Fins within seven, 45-38.

Trading scoring runs up until the final minute, the Fins were down by four with 1:54 on the clock but had to resort to fouls to save time. Taylor converted on all her shots from the charity strip and closed the door on the contest.

Edwards and Reddick led JU in scoring with 11 each. Edwards also recorded five steals and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Briona Brown chipped in with eight points and two steals.

“I knew we would be sluggish coming off of a week off and because of that we couldn’t get going in the first half,” said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. “We had no energy and when we played with it, we had already dug to deep a deficit to recover. All we can do is prepare to take on our next opponent on Tuesday.”

Jacksonville heads west this week and visits Alabama on Tuesday, Dec. 17 for a noon tip.
