THE GAMES

The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team will look to claim the top spot in the Atlantic Sun as they face Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, Jan. 23. Both teams are unbeaten in conference play and are on a five-game win streak. Tip-off is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the contest will be streamed at no fee on ESPN3.

The Eagles command the all-time series with an 11-1 landslide. The Dolphins sole victory over FGCU occurred on Jan. 5, 2008 which was also the first meeting between the two.

JU then continues their road trip on Saturday, Jan. 25 against defending conference champion Stetson at 1 p.m. The Hatters hold the series record with a 19-13 advantage.

JU’S LAST OUTTING: THIS IS OUR HOUSE

After a stressful December, the Dolphins opened conference action rejuvenated and refreshed.  Last week’s 67-56 victory over Northern Kentucky moved the Fins to 5-0 in league play and 8-8 on the season. JU had three players finish in double-digits with senior guard Stephanie Edwards leading the way with 16 points.

Averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, sophomore guard Queen Alford was also clutch in the team’s last two victories. In the 86-65 win over the Lipscomb, she led JU in scoring with 17 points to go alongside seven rebounds, four assists and two steals and against NKU she chipped in with 14 points and eight boards.

THE ATLANTIC SUN IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL

There has been a recent surge in the Dolphins that only conference play can explain. Over the last five games, the Dolphins have five players averaging double-figures.

Freshman guard Sherranda Reddick has managed an outstanding freshman campaign thus far and her stats have heightened in league action. She leads the Fins with 14.2 points per game, shooting 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the field.

THE OPPONENTS

The Eagles (11-6, 5-0) have won 41 consecutive Atlantic Sun games in the last three seasons for the nation’s second-best streak. Senior captain Sarah Hansen currently leads the team with 13.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She is trailed closely by redshirt-sophomore guard Whitney Knight who is averaging 13.2 points and 4.7 boards on the season.

The Hatters (11-5, 3-1) are coming off of a 72-60 road win over Mercer last Thursday. With one of the best starting lineups in the conference, Stetson boasts the best scoring offense as every starter is averaging double-figures.  Senior forward Sasha Sims ties Melody Doss of NKU as the best scorer in the A-Sun with 17.9 points per game.
