Gehlhausen’s Ace Highlights Second Round for Women’s Golf
SARASOTA, Fla. – Behind Jessica Welch’s round of 69, the Jacksonville University women’s golf team shook off its rough start in Sunday’s first round and delivered a team score of 293 on Monday, a number that tied for the third-lowest total of the day.

Welch, a junior, shot the first round in the 60s this fall for the Dolphins, going into the clubhouse with a score of -3 for the day and +3 for the tournament. She’ll enter tomorrow’s final round in a tie for 16th, seven strokes back of the individual leaders. Junior Natalie Schmett fired an even par round of 72 to wrap up her round as the second-best finisher for JU.

The shot of the day – and likely the tournament for that matter – belonged to senior Carlie Gehlhausen. Teeing off on the par-3 16th with a 7 wood, Gehlhausen aced the 174-yard hole on her way to a round of 76. She was matched by senior Francesca Yong, who also closed out with a 76 on Monday. Morgan Matchett ended the day with a 77.

With the team’s low score on the day, Jacksonville leapt over the top of four teams to move into 11th place. The Dolphins enter Tuesday’s final round only a shot back of A-Sun rivals Florida Gulf Coast. There were plenty of changes atop the leaderboard as well. Daytona State shot a 1-under par 287 as a team, vaulting ahead of FIU and Maryland and into the lead.
