Record-Setting Day Puts Women’s Golf in Prime Position
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s golf team got its spring season off to a rousing start on Monday with a pair of program records at the Amelia National Golf Club. Entering the final round in a tie for third place, the Dolphins will be teeing off in the final groups as play resumes on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Monday’s first round of the Amelia Island Collegiate put Jacksonville in a tough spot, with two rounds of 75 from Jessica Welch and Morgan Matchett leading the team through 18 holes. JU was in eighth place and a shot back of North Florida as the field made the turn and began the second round.
It was a different story in the afternoon for the Dolphins. While others fell off the pace, JU stayed strong, going three-under par as a team and shattering the previous program single-round record of 292 recorded in the fall season of 2011. Behind Sabrina Rumbaugh’s round of 69 and a 70 from Natalie Schmett, Jacksonville rocketed up the leaderboard by shooting at least nine strokes better than all but the two teams that currently occupy the top two spots. Both the 285 that the Dolphins recorded in the second round and the 589 that they shot on the day are now school records.
Rumbaugh is the top individual for Jacksonville after Monday’s play. The freshman matched JU’s low round of the year with her 69 and is in a tie for seventh place overall.
Florida International leads the tournament after 36 holes with a team score of 559 (-17). Kennesaw State is in second at 572 (-4), while Daytona State is tied with JU after the first day at 589 (+13).
T7 Sabrina Rumbaugh 76-69 = 145

T18 Natalie Schmett 78-70 = 148
T21 Morgan Matchett 75-74 = 149
