JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On a frigid Tuesday evening, two esteemed women’s lacrosse programs officially kicked off the 2014 season. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they were on the losing side of the contest as they suffered a 21-7 defeat to Syracuse at Southern Oak Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Wiglesworth led JU with two goals while five other Dolphins added one.

“I would have liked to see the first half be a little more competitive for us,” said Head Coach Mindy McCord. “I think we got a lot of players some great experience out there and we worked hard till the end. We never gave up and played a better second half but we have to be more disciplined. We have a lot of work to do to really take our game to the next level and we’ll be practicing that before Florida.”

Senior attackers Ali Hoffman and Brittney Orashen charged the JU defense with three groundballs each while junior goalkeeper Asia Moore recorded 10 saves.

The Orange scored within the first minute of the contest and rattled off five goals over the next eight minutes before the Dolphins could get on board. A failed clear attempt provided the Dolphins with their first goal of the season as Wiglesworth ripped the ball past the SU goalie (18:21).

Nearly reaching the midpoint of the first half, Syracuse had jacked six more goals to take a 12-1 lead and continued their offensive attack through the close of the frame, entering intermission with a 17-3 advantage.

The Fins were clutch on free-position shots in the second frame as they went a perfect 3-for-3. Junior attacker Taylor McCord, the Atlantic Sun’s Preseason Player of the Year, laced a goal with 17:38 left in the game to liven the JU squad. Four consecutive goals cut the Syracuse advantage to 19-7 at 3:29 but with the clock winding down the Fins were unable to generate another run.

Sophomore Kayla Treanor tallied five goals and four assists for the Orange while senior Alyssa Murray added four scores and three assists.

With weeks to prepare for their next contest, Jacksonville returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12 as they visit Florida for a 6:30 p.m. game.
