EDISON, N.J. - The Jacksonville University women’s Varsity Eight crews are making a splash in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Outlasting league competitors Stetson and Drake last week, the Dolphins maneuvered the 2,000 meter Lake Beresford course with the fastest times. For their stellar performances both the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight crews have been announced as the MAAC boats of the week.
The First Varsity Eight boat opened the regatta with a first place finish (7:05.41), with Drake crossing the finish line in 7:29.05 and Stetson coming in third with a time of 7:31.17. The same Dolphin crew then went on to win the second Varsity Eight race in the top spot with a time of 7:12.87, nearly 15 seconds ahead of the second place Bulldogs. The crew consisted of Maycee Dioneda (Coxswain), Danielle Keeler, Stefanie Keeler, Jules Welch, Cat Plesko, Victoria Hernandez, Jessica Mathews, Veronika Stasaityte, and Jordyn Clary.
Jacksonville’s Second Varsity Eight boat also claimed the top spot in their race (7:25), finishing a full 12 seconds before Drake. Competing in the final V8 competition of the day, the boat finished third with a time of 7:28. While the coxswains, Lauren Whetzel and Renee Pharis, switched between the two races, the seats remained the same with Anna Palmer, Laura Stevenson, Jenna Holt, Victoria Tkacz, Allison Rector, Ashley Hirt, Jodi Coia, and Sydney Warpness.
Next up, JU men’s and women’s programs will be back in action on Saturday, March 29 as they host Florida at the Negaard Rowing Center. Join the Dolphins at 8 a.m. for the "Battle of the St. Johns".
