Sand Volleyball Splits Sunday

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Jacksonville University sand volleyball split on Sunday in the final day of the UNF Sand Volleyball Invite, falling to Florida State 5-0 before beating FAU 4-1. The Fins stand 1-4.

Jacksonville’s No. 1 through No. 4 duos beat FAU, while No. 5 fell in three sets.

No. 1 Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist won 21-17 and 21-13, No. 2 Jizzian Gesualdo and Gabriela Roman battled back from a 16-21 first set loss to win 21-19 and 15-8, No. 3 Kendall Courtney and Niatha Cullen won 21-16 and 23-21, and No. 4 Mayara Prestes and Alyssa Robertson swept 22-20 and 21-15.

No. 5 Emily Laskelle and Rachel Miller fought back from a 16-21 first set loss to win the second set 21-16 before losing the final 15-9.

Against FSU, Jacksonville’s five pairs lost in straight sets.

No. 1 Strausbaugh and Nyquist lost 21-18 and 21-16, No. 2 Courtney and Roman lost 21-14 and 21-13, No. 3 Laskelle and Cullen were swept 21-11 and 21-10, No. 4 Prestes and Robertson lost 21-10 and 21-19, and No. 5 Homrich and Shelby Barnett lost 21-7 and 21-12.

Next, Jacksonville will compete at the Cocoa Beach Tournament, March 14-16.
