GULF SHORES, Ala. – Though the season didn’t end quite as
they would have hoped, it was still a successful season for the Jacksonville
University sand volleyball duo of senior Taylor Nyquist and junior Sammie
Strausbaugh, who went 1-3 in pool play at the American Volleyball Coaches
Association (AVCA) Sand Volleyball National Championships over the weekend. The
pair was making their second straight trip to Nationals, and ended 1-3
competing against teams from Long Beach State, Louisiana-Monroe, Loyola
Marymount and UAB.
Nyquist and Strausbaugh opened pool play with a 1-1 day on Friday in which they lost their opening match to Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Tordorovic of Long Beach State before recovering with a three-set victory against Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas of UAB.
Concluding pool play on Saturday, the pair lost matches to Betsi Metter and Litara Keil of Loyola Marymount and Zuzana Markova and Marcela Araya of Louisiana-Monroe to bow out of the competition. At 1-3, they fell just shy of the record needed to advance into the single-elimination bracket that followed.
Nyquist and Strausbaugh concluded the sesaon with a 17-11 record.
