JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Redshirt senior goalie Sarah Sierra was honored as the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after allowing just a single goal in two matches over the weekend and earning a shutout victory over Georgia State on Sunday. Facing Georgia on Friday night before the matchup with the Panthers on Sunday, Sierra made 13 saves on the weekend and gave her team the chance to come away with two victories on the road.
Though she suffered the hard-luck loss on Friday night, Sierra was at her best throughout the match, holding Georgia scoreless for just shy of 100 minutes. The Bulldogs peppered the Jacksonville end with 26 shots, but JU’s well-organized defense only let nine of those land on goal. Sierra made eight saves in the contest and performed admirably against considerable pressure.
Jacksonville was able to turn the tables on Sunday, scoring late in the contest to come away with a 1-0 defeat of Georgia State. Sierra had five saves in the game and, after missing last season due to injury, earned her first 90-minute shutout since Oct. 14, 2011 in a 2-0 win over Lipscomb.
Sierra will once again play a key role for the Dolphins this weekend when Jacksonville faces a challenging set of games – one on the road and one back home at Southern Oak Stadium. On Friday night, JU travels to Statesboro, Ga. to meet the Georgia Southern Eagles at 7 p.m. Returning back to the River City, the Dolphins face a Minnesota team that enters the weekend undefeated on Sunday at 2 p.m.
