MIAMI, Fla. – Jacksonville ended its Felsberg Memorial Tournament run with a 1-0 win over Maryland (0-5) to open its 2014 season with a 3-2 record.
In Jacksonville’s first at-bat in the bottom of the first, sophomore Victoria Brown hit a solo shot deep to center for her third home run in the past three days. Brown (2-0) also secured her second win in the complete game, fanning three, allowing just two hits and tossing 50 strikes of 74 pitches.
Maryland freshman pitcher Hannah Dewey (0-3) took the loss, walking four, allowing one hit and one earned run in nine batters faced. Dewey was relieved by junior Kaitlyn Schmeiser in the bottom of the second, who struck out seven, walked one and allowed two hits in 4.2 innings.
In addition to Brown (1-for-3), senior Codi Kelly (1-for-3) and sophomore Cecile Gomez (1-for-2) each recorded one hit.
Next, Jacksonville will travel to Gainesville on Wednesday, Feb. 12 for a single game at Florida.
