@JUsoftball Splits with Marist
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball split its Thursday non-conference double-header against Marist College, winning 10-8 in the first game before falling 7-2.
The Dolphins stand 12-15 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic Sun conference, while Marist is 6-12 overall.
Karson Tuck, Lexie Ballard, Emily Sanchez and Brooke Smith all hit .500 on the day. Tuck finished 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, Ballard went 3-for-6 with one home run and three RBI, Sanchez closed out 3-for-6 with two RBI, and Smith finished 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI.
GAME ONE: JACKSONVILLE 10, MARIST 8
Marist began the day with a two-run homer to left field for a 2-0 advantage against Victoria Brown in the circle before Jacksonville recorded seven runs on six hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning to take the 7-2 lead. Tuck hit an RBI single to left field that plated Codi Kelly from third, Stephanie Frances’s RBI single to left scored pinch runner Adrienne Ramsay, Smith’s 2-RBI single up the middle plated Tuck and Charli Bradshaw, and Ballard blasted a three-run homer to right field that brought home Smith and Frances.
After two straight scoreless innings in the second and third, Marist added to the scoreboard with four runs in the top of the fourth inning, one in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Jacksonville tallied one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the sixth.
In the circle, Brown (6-6) earned the win, striking out two, walking four, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits in 3.1 innings. Taylor Rossman pitched 3.2 innings of relief, fanning four, walking two, and allowing three runs (three earned) on five hits. Marist’s Jayne Oberdorf (0-3) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and one walk in 4.0 innings. Paige Lewis tossed 2.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs (two earned) on one hit and two walks.
GAME 2: MARIST 7, JACKSONVILLE 2
The contest was tied 1-all after two innings. Marist’s Nicole Cheek scored from third base on an RBI walk by Kyrsten Van Natta, while Jacksonville evened the field in the bottom of the second inning when Frances’s ground out to second scored Tuck from third base.
But from there, the Red Foxes gained momentum, earning four runs in the top of the fifth inning and two in the top of the sixth.
Brown smashed a bomb of a home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning for a last chance effort before the game ended with a 7-2 Marist advantage.
Marist’s Janine Lalli (2-3) recorded the win, fanning four, walking one and allowing two runs (two earned) on seven hits in the complete game.
For Jacksonville, Jessi Walker took her second loss of the season, striking out four while walking seven and allowing two runs (two earned) on two hits in 4.0 innings. Rossman and Brown pitched the remainder of the game, allowing five more runs.
Next, Jacksonville will return to Atlantic Sun conference play this weekend, hosting Mercer on Saturday and Sunday.
