JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A-Sun Release
Senior pitcher Matt Dobbins was named Atlantic Sun Conference "Pitcher of the Week" after leading the Dolphins to a 9-0 win over UNC Wilmington to complete a 3-0 weekend for Dolphins at the JU Invitational.
An All-America selection in 2006, Dobbins suffered through nagging injuries last season but looked like his old self to start 2008 by tallying his longest outing in over a year. In his first start, Dobbins helped JU to its first shutout since March of 2007 by hurling six scoreless innings against the Seahawks.
"Matt was an All-American and conference pitcher of the year, so we know what he is capable of," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "It was exciting to see him getting into a rhythm on the mound after having a rough year in 2007. We look forward to seeing more good things from as the season progresses."
Dobbins, who was named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team, scattered three hits while walking one batter and striking out two. He also did not allow a leadoff man aboard and had only one player reach second base (double) in the game.
The Dolphins will open A-Sun action this weekend at Gardner-Webb beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
